They generally have a sprawling to erect habit, though they can take on a somewhat matted effect when animals burrow beneath them, causing the stems to collapse and reroot. The tree-like <em>Cylindropuntia<\/em> species, such as <em>Cylindropuntia acanthocarpa<\/em> and <em>G.&nbsp;munzii<\/em>, can grow to 15-ft tall or more. <em>Cylindropuntia <\/em>species, like <em>Opuntia&nbsp;<\/em>species, hybridize sparingly within the genus. However, there are no known intergeneric hybrids, either natural or man-made, among&nbsp;<em>Opuntia<\/em>,<em>&nbsp;Cylindropuntia<\/em>, or&nbsp;<em>Grusonia<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">Grusonia<\/span><\/h4>\n<figure id=\"attachment_29786\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29786\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"border-black wp-image-29786 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.opuntiads.com\/cyl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/grusonia-aggeria-ch5-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Grusonia aggeria\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.opuntiads.com\/cyl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/grusonia-aggeria-ch5-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.opuntiads.com\/cyl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/grusonia-aggeria-ch5.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-29786\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.opuntiads.com\/cyl\/corynopuntia-aggeria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><em>Grusonia aggeria<\/em><\/span><\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong><em>Grusonia<\/em>&nbsp;are&nbsp;similar to C<em>ylindropuntia<\/em>&nbsp;in many&nbsp;ways<\/strong>, but they have short stems that grow along the ground in a matted or clumped form with no distinct trunk. The joints of <em>Grusonia <\/em>are clavate (club-shaped), meaning they are wider at the top than the bottom. The spines of <em>Grusonia&nbsp;<\/em>are flattened rather than round, and the papery sheaths on the spines cover only the tips of the spines rather than the entire length of the spines as in <em>Cylindropuntia<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Like <em>Cylindropuntia<\/em>, <em>Grusonia<\/em>&nbsp;was&nbsp;formerly placed in the genus&nbsp;<em>Opuntia. <\/em>The taxonomic status of <em>Grusonia<\/em>&nbsp;is still under study, and it currently appears likely that research will support the division of these so-called &#8220;dog chollas&#8221; into at least three genera: <em>Grusonia<\/em>, <em>Grusonia<\/em>, and <em>Micropuntia<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h3>What We Do<\/h3>\n<p><strong>We describe the various species and provide photographs so you can see details.<\/strong> The goal is to show you what these plants look like and to describe them in easily understood terms.
