Opuntia multigeniculata (Cylindropuntia) Clokey (Backeb.)

O. multigeniculata is a poorly documented taxon that is variously reported to be a naturalling occuring hybrid or a stable and self-propagating species; some have reported that it is a hybrid between O. echinocarpa and O. whipplei. Apparently it has even been considered as a variety of O. whipplei (Opuntia whipplei var. multigeniculata - [Clokey] L. Benson). The State of Nevada Department of Conservation & Natural Resources has published a short monograph about this taxon.

Fruits are often not spined, but they may be spined. One Web site (the Vegetation Around Las Vegas) provides a variety of nice images of O. multigeniculata. The photos on this page were kindly provided by an Arizona natural historian.
