Chickamauga (a presumed Opuntia hybrid)Chickamauga is sold by Nearly Native Nursery in Georgia. 'N3 Chickamauga' is purported a naturally ocurring hybrid between O. humifusa and O. macrorhiza that was collected by retired Georgia botanist Jim Allison. Chickamauga is an attractive garden plant that can (with some effort) be used as a hanging plant because it is very prostrately pliable. When grown in a hanging manner the plant conveniently places its flowers upright so they can be enjoyed; you don't have to be "under" the plant to see the flowers. With regular water in the growing season, and some fertilizer, the plant is a stellar grower and bloomer, or it can be grown under more xeric conditions. Chickamauga is larger than a typical O. humifusa or O. macrorhiza plant. The authors of this Website have not been able to verify its origins.
