Opuntia ammophila Small

Some authorities have described O. ammophila as a variety or subspecies of O. humifusa (O. compressa). Herein, O. ammophila is accepted as a distinct species, separate from O. humifusa. Plants can form small tree-shapes up to 2 m, but such plants are apparently no longer found. Clearly, a 2- meter-tall tree is very different from O. humifusa.

Read the original description from the Journal of the New York Botanical Garden, 20: 29-30 (including plate 224) 1919.

Most plants were photographed in Highland County, Florida. All photos copyright Danny Green, 2006, 2007.
