Opuntia species nova aff. engelmannii
(temporary designation)
These plants were observed growing in very rocky situations (or on lava) in central and north-central New Mexico. They resemble Opuntia engelmannii but are more spiny. Even gracile forms, or shade-grown plants have a spinier appearance than does O. engelmannii. Plants from different locations are depicted on this page; it is not certain they all represent a single taxon.
